Founded in 1976 by William A. Hinks, Furniture Mart USA has grown from a single location in Sioux Falls, SD to a Top 40 Furniture Retailer with over 40 locations across a six-state region. After high school, he made his move to South Dakota where he drove an Old Home Bakery truck, working the route between Sioux Falls and Brookings for 13 hours a day, six days a week. All the trips in the shadow of South Dakota State University inspired him to enroll in 1966. By that time, he was in his late 20s and had a young family. To continue to afford going to school, he bought a filling station in Brookings which was the first of many entrepreneurial ventures including the mobile home business. In 1972, after completing college at South Dakota State University, Hinks moved to Sioux Falls and started a University Homes, a mobile home lot on West 12th Street. The mobile homes came with furniture, many people didn’t need it, so twice a year the furniture would get loaded into a garage and a sale was held. Then, a vision was born. After five years in the mobile home business and seeing the success of the twice a year furniture sale had, Hinks thought about getting into the furniture business. Shortly after, he attended his first furniture market in Florida and opened his first furniture store.
Since, the first location opening in 1977, the last 40 years have been filled with astounding growth and advancements. Today, under Hinks’ advisement, Furniture Mart USA has grown to the 35th largest furniture retailer in America and looks forward to serving as a holistic solution for our customer’s home and design needs and to provide them with beautiful, affordable furniture and sleep solutions.
